Muscle-strengthening activity and mortality (Momma 2022)

Meta-analysis linking resistance work to lower disease risk.

Momma and colleagues pooled cohort studies and found muscle-strengthening activity associated with lower all-cause mortality, CVD, cancer, and diabetes—often in the 30–60 minutes per week range. Observational, but the signal is consistent.

Abstract
Muscle-strengthening activities were associated with a 10–17% lower risk of all-cause mortality and major non-communicable diseases, with J-shaped dose responses peaking around 30–60 minutes per week.
Key findings
Inverse associations for all-cause death, CVD, total cancer, diabetes, and lung cancer; combined strength plus aerobic work looked better still.
Methodology
Systematic review and meta-analysis of 16 prospective cohorts (PROSPERO CRD42020219808).
